It was a big night for the music industry on Sunday as some of your fave artists showed up, performed and even won hardware at the 2019 American Music Awards in Los Angeles.
The night belonged to Taylor Swift, who won a whopping six trophies—including artist of the decade—and has now broken the record for the most AMAs of all time.
But there were other buzzy and very Black moments throughout the show that we loved. Here are six of them.
Ciara Is The Host With The Most
Ci Ci took on hosting duties for this year’s award ceremony and her unapologetic Blackness was a welcome sight to see! Plus can we talk about that opening number?
Lil Nas X Wins Favorite Rap/Hip-Hop Song
“Finally” is the first thing Lil Nas X said when he went up to receive his award for Favorite Song – Rap/Hip-Hop from Megan Thee Stallion and When They See Us’s Jerome Jharrel.
But it was the rest of his speech that had us in our feelings. “Whether you’re like 15, 30, 55 or whatever and you feel like your moment has passed, know that, it’s waiting for you!” he said.
Toni Braxton Shows Your Faves How It’s Done
The iconic singer was a vision in white as she delivered an enchanting performance of her No. 1 record-breaking hit “Un-Break My Heart.” This was her first time back on the AMA stage in 25 years.
Regina King Nonchalantly Slays
Regina King may have not been there to pick up any hardware (the Emmys and Golden Globes will be another story), but she was definitely one of the best dressed in the AMA audience.
Lizzo’s Performance Of “Jerome”
Decked in pink chiffon and barefeet, Lizzo left it all on the stage when she gave an emotional performance of her song “Jerome.”
La La’s Cameo During Ciara’s “Melanin” Performance
La La Anthony is featured in Ciara’s new anthem for the brown girls, “Melanin” and the besties got to perform the song on stage.
“This is a moment we will talk about when we are old ladies.”
