Girls Trip is a box office winner!
The numbers are in and the well-reviewed film took second place in its opening weekend with $30.4 million. Christopher Nolan’s World War II-based Dunkirk won the weekend with $50.5 million.
That makes Girls Trip the largest opening of any live-action comedy so far this year. This news comes after most adult comedies have failed to do well in 2017.
The Regina Hall, Queen Latifah, Tiffany Haddish and Jada Pinkett Smith comedy beat expectations and already made up the less than $20 million it took to make it. (Girls Trip’s numbers also mark the highest opening weekend ever for director Malcolm D. Lee).
“Funny is funny. And it’s a really funny movie,” said Universal’s President of Domestic Distribution Nick Carpou.
Hidden Figures was the last major movie released with an ensemble-lead cast of black women, and it pulled $22.8 million in its first weekend to open at number one last year.
Based on anecdotal evidence, black women for sure showed up for Girls Trip. The film is also receiving rave reviews on social media!
