Season three of Black-ish is bringing in a new family member portrayed by Tony Award-winning actor Daveed Diggs.
Diggs will play Bow’s (Tracee Ellis Ross) brother Johan. According to Variety, while Barris didn’t give an exact episode, Diggs’ character is expected to turn up early in the season for a recurring arc. Barris describes Johan as “sort of a hipster, entitled kid who gets on Dre’s nerves. He’s probably gone to Penn or Wharton and could have gotten a great-paying job, but he’s trying to find himself. That attitude more than anything makes Dre want to strangle him.”
Like many who saw Hamilton, the Black-ish creator was floored by Diggs’ performance and when he heard the actor was a fan of the show he just had to cast him. “I was completely blown away by the whole show. Everyone was great, but there was a certain charismatic nature to [Diggs] when he came out. I noticed each time — he was the guy where the audience kind of [perked] up and said, ‘Oh my God, this guy!’ And I had heard through some of the cast members and through some other people that Black-ish was his favorite show. We had been looking for someone to bring on for [that] role, and I felt like he would be such a welcome addition to the family.”
Black-ish is set to return Sept. 21, we can’t wait to meet Johan and watch him shake up house.
