After racking in more than a whooping $360 million – state side – for its live-action adaptation of The Jungle Book earlier this year, Disney and Jon Favreau (Iron Man, The Avengers) are teaming up to recreate the film conglomerate’s animated classics as live-action films, starting with The Lion King.
Excited about the news, Favreau posted a since deleted (and later reposted) tweet simply saying, “Excited for my next project,” with two accompanying emojis – a lion and a crown.
Excited for my next project 🦁👑

According to Paste Magazine, Disney confirmed its partnership with Favreau by announcing production for the “live-action adaptation of Disney’s seminal animated film.” While the success of The Jungle Book may serve as the catalyst to Disney’s slew of upcoming cinematic inspirations, it certainly isn’t the first. Disney recently recreated Snow White, Sleeping Beauty, and Cinderella in live-action form with Snow White and the Huntsman (2012), Maleficent (2014) and Cinderella (2015).
In addition to The Lion King, other Disney films up for live-action release are The Jungle Book 2 and Beauty and The Beast, which is slated to hit theaters in 2017.
The Lion King has no set release date at this time.
