Songstress Ella Mai is no stranger to incorporating the beloved 90’s R&B sound into her music and she recently paid homage to the undeniably influential era yet again on her new album.
While the 23-year-old starlet’s impressive debut effort offers nods to a few fan-favorites of the both the 90s and today’s music scene—including Brownstone’s “If You Love Me” and Drake’s “Legend”—the use of one sample in particular is proving a standout among R&B lovers…and for good reason. Michigan-born
songstress Adina Howard delivered several singles that remain staples in many an R&B collection back when she made her first major mark on the music scene in 1995, and Mai perfectly paid homage to one of her most popular singles, “T-Shirt & Panties,” with a song on her album titled, “Own It.”
Like “T-Shirt & Panties,” “Own It” features
unapologetically sexy lyrics that hear Mai detailing plans for an intimate night in with her lover over a slow and sensual beat.
“I know you’re on your way, to get caught up in the way. We turnin’ night into mornin, I keep you up, keep it goin.’ Make you feel a way, yeah, I’m gon’ have my way. So tell me I get it, I own it,” she sings on the song’s chorus.
