Sevyn Streeter’s new single “Before I Do” is an R&B, Aaliyah-inspired track about a potential relationship and the singer’s hesitation to dive in. The video for the track reflects that vulnerability.
In the exclusive visual, Streeter waxes poetic and walks and writhes dreamily, reflecting on the relationship. “The concept for the video was birthed from the simplicity of the song. I wanted it to be raw and vulnerable. It’s all about reflection. Being alone, in your home with your thoughts,” Streeter tells ESSENCE.
While the song may not be about a specific love interest, the singer says she pulled from aspects of her life: “I always pull from my life in one way or another. ‘Before I Do’ was no different! The song was brought to me half written, but the story spoke to me so deeply that the rest of the words just flowed from an honest place.”

“Before I Do” is the latest release from Streeter’s upcoming Girl Disrupted, her highly anticipated debut album. Fans can expect to hear the singer tackle love, life, and relationships on her new album, topics she’s taken on for her previous EPs. With Girl Disrupted, she’s coming at them with a new view. “I tackled a lot of the same subject matter, but the difference is I’m not the same person I was yesterday or the day, week, month, year before. We evolve. So my new music is from a new perspective. Less naive, more confident and it made me a better version of myself,” she said.
With her new album slated for release next year and a tour to follow, Streeter is ready to hit the road and have fun with fans: “It’s going to feel good to sing the new songs I’ve released. Nothing like being in a room with all of my fans singing, dancing and having a good time! It can’t start soon enough for me! This next year for me is really about Girl Disrupted! I really want people to love this album and get to know me better from it.”
