It looks like Tyler Perry made former Cosby Show star Geoffrey Owens an offer he couldn’t refuse.
After the veteran actor was shamed for working at a New Jersey Trader Joe’s to make ends meet between gigs, Perry stepped in to offer Owens a job on his hit OWN drama, The Haves and the Have Nots.
“Geoffrey Owens I’m about to start shootings OWN’s number one drama next week,” Perry tweeted. “Come join us!!! I have so much respect for people who hustle between gigs. The measure of a true artist.”
According to TMZ, Owens accepted.
The celebrity news site reports Owens will begin shooting with Perry and the cast next week and will have a recurring role for 10 episodes.
Owens has seen an outpouring of love since the story about his employment status went viral, but the actor said he didn’t want to be thought of as a charity case.
“I don’t expect to be offered things,” Owens told Entertainment Tonight after Perry let it be known he wanted to work with the actor.
“It would be lovely as one of the results of this, some doors open in terms of giving me the opportunity to audition. That, I would appreciate — always, as all actors do,” he continued. “I don’t necessarily feel comfortable being given things as a result of this.”
While Owens doesn’t want any handouts, given his pedigree as a Yale grad, acting teacher, and veteran of the screen and stage, we’re certain he earned his place on Perry’s hit show.
