Back in April, ESSENCE was fortunate enough to see For Ahkeem, a moving documentary that explores Black girlhood and the struggles faced in a marginalized St. Louis, Missouri community.
Now, the film is set for a wide release and viewers can get a look at the documentary in this exclusive clip.
In this ESSENCE exclusive, Daje Shelton, the film’s protagonist, discusses the Michael Brown shooting with friends and recalls the death of her cousin, who was shot by police.
It’s a quick glimpse of how the event affected the lives of those in the community and a look at how teens understand and discuss police brutality.
For Ahkeem opens in theaters Friday, Oct. 13.
