The director known as Calmatic delivered a hit in the Western spoof he executed for Lil Nas X’s “Old Town Road.” His visuals for the smash single have received over nine million views and tons of critical acclaim. They also featured slick celebrity cameos from people like Chris Rock, Rico Nasty, Vince Staples, and Diplo.
Now he is putting his spin on another type of classic-the House Party franchise. According to The Hollywood Reporter, he has signed on to direct the upcoming House Party remake for New Line Cinema.
The project is in development and Lebron James’ company SpringHill Entertainment. It is being written by Atlanta writers Stephen Glover and Jamal Olori. The hip-hop Twin Peaks style writing on the popular cable show compliments the deadpan stares Calmatic perfected in ‘Old Town Road.’
The original House Party was released in 1990. The story followed rap duo Kid ‘n Play (Christopher Reid and Christopher Martin) as they sidestepped strict parents, and punishing bullies to throw a wild party their classmates would never forget.
Lil Nas X isn’t the only one in the music industry who recognizes Calmatic’s talent he’s directed nostalgic videos with modern twists for artists like Khalid and Anderson .Paak.
Clearly, he’s got the nineties vibes on lock.
