Hallelujah! A Black Lady Sketch Show has been renewed for a second season by HBO.
The half-hour comedy sketch show written by, directed by and starring Black women debuted earlier this month and has already made a big impact.
A Black Lady Sketch Show presents sketches performed by a core cast of Black women, including creator Robin Thede, Ashley Nicole Black (who also writes for the series), Gabrielle Dennis and Quinta Brunson.
But the real treats are the hilarious guest appearances from names such Angela Bassett, Lena Waithe, Loretta Devine, Gina Torres, Aja Naomi King and more. Since its debut, ABLSS has been stellar showcase of smart, funny, beautiful Black women.
“It’s been thrilling to see the audience embrace the characters that Robin, Ashley, Gabrielle and Quinta have brought to life,” said Amy Gravitt, executive VP of HBO programming. “We had a blast making this groundbreaking sketch show with Robin, Dime [Davis] and all of the writers and producers, and I can’t wait to see what next season holds.”
Robin Thede executive produces, writes and stars; Issa Rae serves as executive producer.
“Seeing us, Black women, on screen is political,” Thede told ESSENCE of the show. “That’s all the politics we need. My purpose is to let people see there are so many different types of Black women and I want them all represented.”
