Almost four years after the finale of the BBC series Luther, Idris Elba is reprising his role as the series’ titular character in the upcoming Netflix film Luther: The Fallen Sun.
News of the continuation film broke in December of last year, via the streamer’s Twitter account. In the film, a serial killer played by Andy Serkis is terrorizing London while the brilliant but disgraced detective sits behind bars. Haunted by his failure to capture the cyber psychopath who now taunts him, Luther decides to break out of prison to finish the job by any means necessary.
Creator Neil Cross wrote the new project, and Jamie Payne will return as its director. According to Variety, Cynthia Erivo also stars in the film alongside Elba, who has appeared in several films – The Suicide Squad, The Harder They Fall, and Thor: Love and Thunder – since viewers last saw him in a portrayal of the conflicted DCI.
During Luther’s five-season run, the show received 11 Emmy nominations, and Elba earned two Golden Globe wins, a SAG award, a Critics Choice award, along with several Emmy nods.
In addition to Elba, Erivo, and Serkis, Luther: The Fallen Sun also features Dermot Crowley, who returns as Martin Schenk. The Netflix film debuts on the streaming service on March 10, with an early theatrical release of February 24.
