While promoting his upcoming film, Star Trek Beyond, Idris Elba couldn’t dodge questions surrounding the state of Black America.
From terrorist attacks to unnecessary police shootings to police being shot, Idris admits America – and the world – are facing some pretty “troubling times.” To help uplift America and the people in it, Idris Elba recently sat down with The Root, and tapped his alter ego, DJ Big Driis, to create an inspirational playlist for the country’s hard times.
While Big Driis didn’t get the chance to complete his empowerment mix, he gave a preview of the soundtrack saying it would include the likes of Marvin Gaye’s “What’s Going On,” Public Enemy’s “Fight the Power,” Gloria Gaynor’s “I Will Survive” and Jay Z’s “99 Problems.”

After offering the beginning of his music mix, Elba went on to tell The Root that “We are facing some troubling times.” He continued, “I think America: Black America; White America – America is facing troubling times. I think the world is having a massive human uprising, and I suspect it’s the beginnings of some sort of revolution for us.”
