Barry Jenkins is following up his Oscar-winning film Moonlight with an adaptation of James Baldwin’s beloved If Beale Street Could Talk, which, judging from the trailer, could be another Oscar contender for the filmmaker.
Beale Street tells the story of Tish, who is pregnant and newly engaged to Fonny, who is imprisoned after falsely being accused of rape. Their families must fight for Fonny’s release before Tish gives birth to the couple’s child.
The film stars KiKi Layne and Stephan James as Tish and Fonny respectively. Regina King, Teyonah Parris, Colman Domingo, and Brian Tyree Henry round out the star-studded cast.
The film has already received tons of praise from those lucky enough to catch it at this year’s Toronto International Film Festival.
In her review for Shadow & Act, Joi Childs wrote, “If Beale Street Could Talk makes it known that this is a Black film about Black love set in Black America.”
If Beale Street Could Talk arrives in theaters fall 2018.
