Issa Rae and HBO have dropped the official trailer for the actress and writer’s upcoming show Insecure.
Full of awkward moments — like Rae’s character talking to herself in the bathroom, tragically rapping about her birthday, and wondering if her co-workers are having secret white meetings and sending secret white emails — the trailer gives viewers a better glimpse of Rae’s personal life and work.
In an interview with TIME, Rae made it clear that Insecure is a show about a very specific experience and explained that the show’s character might share her sharp wit, but differs from her in other ways.
“She’s me if I didn’t know what I wanted to do.”

Rae and executive producer and director Melina Matsoukas are also bringing Black female friendship back to prime time television. Rae told Vanity Fair that the relationships between Black women on the show are “absolutely central” to Insecure, adding, “It’s so important to show that Black women do have friends. We’re not all just fighting and punching each other and cursing each other out and ending up on the Shade Room together.”
Insecure premiere’s Oct. 9, but until then, get a glimpse of what’s to come in the video below:
