Last weekend, JAY-Z and Beyoncé released their surprise joint album, Everything Is Love, the final installment of one of the best album trilogies in recent years. Following the release of Beyoncé’s musical opus Lemonade and Hov’s most honest and introspective 4:44, the joint offering further unveils details about the notoriously private couple’s rocky but ultimately unbreakable union, including their first date.
On “713”—an ode to Beyoncé, as its title is the area code to her hometown of Houston, Texas—Jay reveals the two’s first fateful encounter, the two-year break in communication and how he brought a friend along on their first date.
“We played it cool at the pool of the Cancun, VMA / Confidence you exude make the fools stay away / Me, I played my room, let the fools have they say / Fate had me sittin’ next to you on the plane / And I knew straight away,” he raps.
The two didn’t speak for two years probably amid busy schedules and the fact that B had a bae at the time, but when they reconnected, the date wasn’t as romantic as fans would probably like to imagine.
“You kept me up on the phone while you were away / You came back, I let you set the date, Nobu on the plate / I brought my dude to play it cool, my first foolish mistake,” he spits.
Lord only knows how the young singer reacted to being the third wheel. Maybe we’ll hear about it on a later track. But for now, through the ups and downs, everything is love between Jay and B.
