John Legend just added some of his own holiday cheer thanks to one of the country’s favorite winter-time standards. The talented EGOT winner just released his rendition of “Baby, It’s Cold Outside,” featuring Kelly Clarkson.
In a previous interview with Vanity Fair, Legend said he wanted to make the classic with a “newfound sensitivity.”
The 75-year-old Frank Loesser song has been caught in the culture wars in recent years, with many questioning the song’s take on consent. Critics of the original song take issue with the male singer’s predatory lyrics in attempting to persuade the female singer to stay inside with him.
Legend went on to share his new lyrics, co-written by Insecure star Natasha Rowell.
“I really can’t stay (Baby it’s cold outside)/I’ve gotta go away (I can call you a ride),” the new lyrics read. “My mother will start to worry (I’ll call a car and tell ’em to hurry).”
“What will my friends think (I think they should rejoice)/If I have one more drink? (It’s your body and your choice),” the lyrics continue.
It is definitely less creepy and we’re glad that a new generation of singers will have something decent to singalong to!
The new version of “Baby It’s Cold Outside” will be featured Legend’s upcoming Christmas album, A Legendary Christmas. It drops today.
