After making a splash in Aquaman—obvious pun but we had to—Yahya Abdul-Mateen II has been cast as the star in Jordan Peele’s upcoming Candyman.
Referred to as the “spiritual sequel” of the 1992 original, the upcoming film returns to the now-gentrified Chicago neighborhood where the Cabrini-Green housing projects once stood.
Director Nia DaCosta, whose Little Woods received tons of praise at last year’s Tribeca Film Festival, is set to helm the project.
This is the second time Abdul-Mateen and Peele have teamed up. The duo worked together on the upcoming horror-thriller Us, which is set to premiere at SXSW.
Candyman will be released in June 2020.
