It’s been announced that director Nia DaCosta will helm Jordan Peele’s upcoming Candyman reboot.
The film will be produced by Peele’s Monkeypaw Productions along with MGM and Win Rosenfeld. Peele and Rosenfeld will also pen the screenplay.
The addition of DaCosta is an exciting decision as the up-and-coming director received tons of praise for her recent feature starring Tessa Thompson and Lily James, Little Woods, which premiered earlier this year at the Tribeca Film Festival .
It’s also exciting to see Peele tap a Black woman to helm the highly-anticipated project.
One person tweeted, “I’m crying at my desk job, because Candyman will be rebooted with Nia DaCosta directing and Jordan Peele producing the film. I’m just so happy. I love positive Black woman representation.”
Deadline reports that the Candyman reboot will be a “spiritual sequel” and will see the film taking place in now-gentrified Chicago, where the legend began.
Peele’s Candyman will arrive in theaters on June 12, 2020.
