If you haven’t heard the story of June and Jennifer Gibbons, it’s one you won’t soon forget.
Born to Barbadian parents, June and Jennifer were twins who grew up in the UK. The sisters rarely spoke and only to each other in rapid English. The two were bullied in their predominantly white community and were later hospitalized after committing a string of crimes.
According to some, the twins had a longstanding pact: if one died, the other would finally speak and go on to live a normal life. In 1993, Jennifer died due to inflammation of the heart.

Now, the sisters’ story is currently being developed as a horror film. According to Graveyard Shift Sisters, a horror/sci-fi blog for Black female horror fans, The Two Sisters will focus on the twins’ tale. The film is currently being developed by Audre’s Revenge, a film production collective that focuses on stories about queer people and people of color. The collective’s founder Monika Estrella Bella stated, “Ultimately, their story is one that is not talked about too often, as it contains the taboos of Black mental health, racism, and the results of white supremacy against Black bodies. Our horrors, our darkest areas. It’s a story to be explored, and told…and I intend to do it.”
The twins’ story is perfect for the big screen and we can’t wait to see what the collective does with it.
