This Is Us writer-producer Kay Oyegun is having quite the year.
Deadline reports that Oyegun has been tapped to adapt Angie Thomas‘ On The Come Up, which takes place in the same universe as Thomas’ New York Times bestselling novel The Hate U Give, which was adapted for the big screen last year and made nearly $35 million at the box office worldwide.
On The Come Up follows rapper Bri, who’s also the daughter of an underground hip-hop legend who died before making it big. Bri finds it hard to follow in her father’s footsteps, but due to her own struggles and watching her mother lose her job, she pours herself into her music to create viral hits.
Oyegun, who signed an overall deal with 20th Century Fox TV earlier this year, will also pen the screenplay for the upcoming adaptation of Tomi Adeyemi’s Children of Blood and Bone, which will be directed by Rick Famuyiwa.
Adeyemi’s debut young adult novel tells the story of Zélie Adebola, who must bring magic back to her native country of Orïsha.
