The whole world could be crumbling and real love will withstand —at least in Kendrick Lamar‘s book. For the rapper’s new video, “Loyalty”, he seeks the companionship of Rihanna for a Dave Meyers-directed video about a rouge couple in love.
Opening with a barking dog and Lamar standing in quicksand, the darkly lit shots of Los Angeles roads and enclaves are similar to his three other videos for DAMN.. In her opening scene the Bajan beauty acts as if she’s soliciting a gentleman caller, before having Lamar fight him and eventually stealing his BMW.
Cutting from quicksand and a simulated rooftop to a kitchen interrogation scene, the video feels like the craziest parts of a Quentin Tarantino film strung together.
“I love everything about her,” Lamar told Zane Lowe in a Beats 1 interview about Rihanna. “Her artistry how she represents women to not only be themselves but to express themselves the way she expresses herself through music and how she caries herself. I love everything about her so I always wanted to work with her.”
Lamar is currently on The DAMN. Tour with pop-up shops coinciding with his stops. His fourth studio album DAMN. dropped in April.
