Today’s music industry is filled with talented youngsters who are on their grind working to make a name for themselves and 16-year-old singer/songwriter Kyla Imani is definitely in the mix.
Also a trained musician who learned to play the piano and guitar as a child, Kyla’s sound and signature style has seen a steady evolution over the past 4 years. After garnering the attention of fans with her impressive acoustic YouTube covers when she was just 12 years old, the budding starlet made her first memorable mark with her kid-friendly rendition of Beyonce’s “7/11” music video in 2014.
She later followed up with the release of her Lemonade-inspired visual EP, Sweet Tea, in 2016.
Keeping the momentum going, Kyla recently teamed up with fellow New Yorker, Jay Critch, for a new single titled “Sittin Up In My Room.” While the title itself is a play on Brandy’s classic single of the same name from the “Waiting To Exhale” soundtrack, Kyla’s version is entirely her own. The song itself hears Kyla deliver smooth vocals over a melodic slow jam, just before Jay Critch makes his way onto the track to liven things up with a catchy rap verse.
