After a successful box offie opening of her feature film, Queen & Slim, Lena Waithe is already looking ahead to the smaller screen. On Tuesday, the writer shared the trailer for her new BET series, Twenties, with the caption, “Lighter Fare.”
The series stars newcomer Jonica “JoJo” T. Gibbs as Hattie, a queer Black writer hoping to make it in entertainment (hmmm, that does sound familiar) as she and her two friends chase their dreams. Gabrielle Graham and Christina Elmore star as Hattie’s best friends, Nia and Marie respectively.
The trailer also includes appearances from Waithe’s mentor Kym Whitley, Iman Shumpert, Vanessa Williams, Rick Fox and rapper Big Sean.
Twenties is the latest series from Waithe, who also co-created BET’s Boomerang reboot, which was renewed earlier this year.
Waithe also recently released Queen & Slim, which stars ESSENCE cover star Jodie Turner-Smith and Get Out‘s Daniel Kaluuya. The film, which follows a couple on an awkward Tinder date that escalates when they shoot a White cop in self-defense, found success following its release, rounding out the top five films over Thanksgiving weekend.
