Lil Nas X has broken the record for longest run atop the Billboard Hot 100.
The rapper’s hit song “Old Town Road” has spent 17 weeks in the number one spot, beating the record set by Mariah Carey and Boyz II Men’s “One Sweet Day” and later matched by Luis Fonsi and Daddy Yankee’s “Despacito.”
Carey took to social media and congratulated the rapper on his achievement, writing on Instagram, “Sending love & congrats to @lilnasx on breaking one of the longest-running records in music history!”
Multiple versions of “Old Town Road,” which features Billy Ray Cyrus, have been released since it appeared on the Billboard chart.
South Korean boy band BTS, Young Thug, Diplo, and 12-year-old yodeler Mason Ramsey have all teamed up with Lil Nas X for their own version of the hit.
Could another week atop the chart be around the corner for the rapper’s viral hit? Possibly.
You can stream “Old Town Road” on Apple Music and Spotify.
