Idris Elba is back as DCI John Luther, but for how long?
BBC America rolled out the first full trailer for the upcoming season of its gritty crime drama, Luther, and from the looks of it, things are going to be stressful.
In the fifth cycle of the series, Luther once again tries to stop a psychotic killer from terrorizing the city of London, but things get a lot more difficult when demons from his past resurface and threaten to wreck it all. According to a press release from the BBC, Luther “must choose who to protect…and who to sacrifice. Whatever his next move, it will have devastating consequences for those around him — and change John Luther forever.”
Season five of the series welcomes new recruit, D.S. Catherine Halliday, played by BAFTA winner Wunmi Mosaku, while fan favorite Ruth Wilson appears to reprise her role Alice Morgan, a killer with a soft spot for the dour detective.
Since its premiere in 2010, the drama has been a critical success, garnering Elba both a Golden Globe and SAG Award for his portrayal of the titular character. While many assumed 2015’s two-episode run was the last we saw of the show, creator Neil Cross said both he and Elba just couldn’t let go.
“We missed John Luther. We missed some old friends. And we wanted to make the biggest, scariest, darkest, most thrilling [season] of ‘Luther’ there’s ever been. So that’s what we’ve come back to do,” he said.
Sounds like viewers are in for a spine-tingling treat.
