Mariah Carey is honoring the 30th anniversary of her debut album by releasing her memoir. The Meaning of Mariah Carey will be released in print and on Audible on September 29, through Andy Cohen Books.
Written with former ESSENCE Fashion Editor, Michaela Angela Davis, the book offers an unrestricted look at the singer and actress’ legendary career from her perspective.
“It took me a lifetime to have the courage and the clarity to write my memoir. I want to tell the story of the moments — the ups and downs, the triumphs and traumas, the debacles and the dreams, that contribute to the person I am today,” wrote Carey in a statement she released on Instagram.
Fans have watched Carey soar to the height of the Billboard charts, sell over 200 million records, appear in Academy Award-winning films, and earn hundreds of awards for decades. They have also seen her experience drastic shifts in her personal life under the scrutiny of the public eye.
Now they are about to get a first hand account of the Emancipation of Mimi.
“I have learned that beauty has to flourish in the light,” she wrote in the caption for the statement. Beside her comments she posted the emoji for her signature butterfly. “You are a brave. brilliant. beautiful….. butterfly. So much more inside,” wrote Davis in the comments.
“This book is composed of my memories, my mishaps, my struggles, my survival and my songs. Unfiltered,” wrote Carey.
She revealed that the process of revisiting certain memories to complete the memoir was difficult for her.
“Writing this memoir was incredibly hard, humbling and healing. My sincere hope is that you are moved to a new understanding, not only about me, but also about the resilience of the human spirit,” she concluded.
