This week is all about New Edition. And it started off right on Monday with the fellas getting their star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame!
It’s been a long time coming for the original five guys from Roxbury, Mass. And all six members that made up the group at one time were on deck: Ricky Bell, Michael Bivins, Bobby Brown, Ronnie DeVoe, Ralph Tresvant and, of course, Johnny Gill.
“Our friendships, our relationships go so far back before New Edition,” Bell said emotionally as they stood on stage. “We came together because we had a passion and a desire to do something. It was simple, it was just to sing, just to dance, just to make some girls scream.”

New Edition created a musical blueprint that all boybands have followed since their rise to pop stardom in the 80s. And now their story is coming to a TV set near you in the form of BET’s three-part miniseries “The New Edition Story” airing Tuesday.
The film focuses on the rise and fall of the band, putting their impact in context of today’s music industry.
“When New Edition came out, we were the first generation of hip-hop; we mixed it with R&B singing,” Brown told Rolling Stone. “Fortunately it worked.”
The cast has some familiar faces including Empire’s Bryshere Gray, who portrays Michael Bivins. You can watch the whole cast answer New Edition trivia with Essence Live above.
