Oprah Winfrey introduces the eccentric character she is playing in the Oprah Winfrey Network’s new drama, Greenleaf.
“I think in every family there is a quote, ‘middle child,’ or ‘black sheep’ or somebody who doesn’t get along with the rest of the family,” says Oprah about her onscreen role as Mavis McCready. “Mavis has her own way of being in the world and her own way of doing things.”
Oprah Winfrey’s Wish for Her ‘Daughters’
Mavis is the aunt of Grace “Gigi” Greenleaf, the show’s main character who is the daughter of a wealthy church bishop; and while the Greenleafs run a church, Mavis is the owner of a nightclub.
“She loves jazz and blues and poetry,” explains Oprah. “In my mind she reminds me of what Maya Angelou would be like if Maya Angelou ran a nightclub.”
