We’re patiently waiting for Melina Matsoukas and Lena Waithe’s forthcoming film Queen & Slim, which doesn’t hit theaters until November 27. But thankfully, we’re getting a taste of the film’s upcoming soundtrack.
Motown Records announced Thursday that it would be releasing the film’s soundtrack on November 15, with new songs from Lauryn Hill, Megan thee Stallion, Vince Staples, and more.
Along with the news came the album’s first single, “Collide,” from Atlanta duo EARTHGANG and Tiana Major9.
“Collide” appears on this week’s Playlist along with songs from City Girls, FKA Twigs, and Pusha T. Check out the playlist below.
EARTHGANG and Tiana Major9 – “Collide”
The first single from Queen & Slim’s upcoming soundtrack is the perfect introduction to an album that includes incredible names.
EARTHGANG is rapidly becoming one of our favorite duos, releasing their major-label debut album Mirrorland back in September and riling up the crowd during Brooklyn’s Afropunk.
City Girls – “First Day Out”
Now that JT is free, it’s about to be a City Girl fall, y’all.
The rap duo released “First Day Out” just hours after JT was released from prison earlier this week.
FKA Twigs – “Home With You”
Twigs sends us spiraling in the new self-directed video for “Home With You.” Starting with a party, the video soon gets surreal as the singer heads home.
Pusha T – Succession remix
HBO series Succession‘s theme song “Puppets,” written by Nicholas Britell, has become a sensation on its own and now Pusha T has put his stamp on it with a remix.
The rapper and Succession fan told Vulture that the remix “was really just a dope exercise.”
“The greed, the resentment, the idea anybody is basically disposable—that’s a gangsta movie type of quality,” Push said. “On Succession, it’s involving family, it’s like, Whoa! It’s a bit more shocking. And so that’s what made the writing process fun, because I could use all of the street, gangster rap nuances and qualities and energy and incorporate it into the theme of the music. It was really just a dope exercise, honestly.”
Stokely – “She”
Stokely recently dropped the video for his first single from Sankofa. The visual starts off with the singer standing shirtless, singing to camera, before things amp up. If you’re looking for a fall bop dedicated to the strength of a woman, the former Mint Condition lead singer delivers with this bass-heavy track.
Summer Walker feat. Bryson Tiller – “Playing Games”
Just after the release of her debut album Over It, Summer Walker has shared the official video for “Playing Games,” featuring Bryson Tiller. It’s her first visual from the project.
Walker takes things into her own hands in this Christine Yuan-directed video, which sees the singer ignoring an ex-lover’s apology and includes one man bound and hanging from the ceiling.
