The ladies of
Red Table Talk are known for bringing all the realness and authenticity in their discussions of real-life issues.
So it’s no surprise that Jada Pinkett Smith, her daughter Willow Smith and mother Adrienne Banfield-Jones decided it was time to talk about white privilege with three other women of color, and how it affects the relationships between white women and women of color.
One of those women was
One Day at a Time actress Justina Machado, who spoke about how difficult it was connecting with people who couldn’t understand the concept of white privilege.
“Somebody once said to me, ‘I’m white and I don’t get white privilege. I don’t get that.’ I didn’t know how to answer that,” Machado in a clip of the episode set to air on Monday.
She continued, “All I could say was, ‘Well, could you walk into a store and do they ask you if you need help?’ Because I’ve certainly walked into stores before and they never asked me if I needed help. ‘Have you been followed in the store?’ They did that a lot in Chicago.”
