The return of Issa Rae‘s hit HBO series Insecure is right around the corner. And after all that happened last season, fans are waiting anxiously to get answers to their many questions.
So to prepare for the shows return, we’ve put together a handy guide to all the things we know about the upcoming season, using cast interviews, clues from the season three trailer and teaser, and theories we’ve seen swirling around the internet.
Here’s everything you need to know ahead of the show’s season three premiere.
Let’s get this out of the way: Lawrence may be done.
Sorry, Lawrence hive, but you may not be seeing much of your boy. Jay Ellis revealed back in April that he’s pretty much been “out of the loop” when it comes to storylines and told radio host Angie Martinez that he hadn’t filmed any scenes for season three. “I’m a little bit out of it,” he said. “I’m not really…they’ve been filming for the last six or seven weeks or something like that.” He added that as far as his character’s relationship with Issa is concerned, “I don’t know if there is a relationship. There was closure at the end. There was full closure.”
However, there will be more Daniel.
When one door closes, another one opens. We might be losing Jay Ellis, but we’ll be getting more of the equally talented and handsome Y’lan Noel, who plays Daniel. At the end of season two, viewers saw Issa pop up on Daniel’s doorstep looking for a place to stay. And as the season three trailer showed, she’s still living there. Expect things between the two to get complicated. Showrunner Prentice Penny also confirmed to Variety that Daniel will play a bigger role in the show.
No more Due North?
Our favorite show within a show may be no more. Penny revealed that a new fakes series would premiere on the show that will be a little more timely. “It’s definitely timely in the wake of a lot of things that happened in Hollywood in the last month or so,” he told Variety.
Molly and Dro might still be a thing, but IS HIS MARRIAGE REALLY OPEN?
The show’s trailer shows Molly telling Issa at brunch that she had to put Dro “in his lane,” but a quick cut shows the two having a little moment. It’s still not quite clear if Dro is really in an open marriage, but, hopefully, season three explores that situation. We don’t want Molly to get hurt. Our girl has shooters out here!
Speaking of complicated, what’s up with Tiffany and Derek?
So, the show’s married couple isn’t exactly complicated, but fans have always had their suspicions. And with Tiffany’s pregnancy, some are even speculating that the baby may not be Derek’s. Who might the father be, then!? Some guy named Fred. Prentice Penny told Vulture that he found the theories around Tiffany and Derek’s marriage “funny,” adding, “I’m seeing all these internet things saying, ‘Tiffany’s not carrying Derek’s baby! That’s that Fred guy’s baby!’ It’s so funny. I kinda like seeing these Derek-Tiffany stans. We might lean into that more and keep people guessing about their marriage.”
Season three may also introduce a timely conversation about toxic masculinity. Speaking with The Hollywood Reporter, show creator Issa Rae mentioned the possibility of season three exploring toxic Black masculinity. “I love Black masculinity as it relates to Black women,” she said. “I think that’s something interesting that we haven’t gotten a chance to explore yet — and specifically toxic male Black masculinity as it relates to black women. I’m trying to find a way to explore that and get a rounded storyline that isn’t preachy.”
What else should fans be on the lookout for?
Well, a discussion about saving money and Issa’s credit score if the number in the show’s trailer is any indication. That means more Natasha Rothwell. Yay! And, Issa thriving at her full-time job. We can’t wait.
Season three of Insecure premieres Sunday at 10:30 pm ET on HBO.
