Ta-Nehisi Coates has revealed a cover image for We Were Eight Years in Power: An American Tragedy, his forthcoming book of new and previously published essays about the Obama era.
Scheduled for release Oct. 3 from Random House’s relaunched One World imprint, the book grew out of Coates’ writings for The Atlantic, including 2012’s Fear of a Black President and this year’s My President Was Black, the latter of which drew on several interviews with then-President Barack Obama.
Coates posted the image — which features navy blue text, a partially torn off-white cover, and a red background — Monday afternoon on Twitter, while also quoting a Kendrick Lamar lyric: “I got so many theories and suspicions …”
We Were Eight Years in Power marks Coates’ follow-up to Between the World and Me, which won the 2015 National Book Award for Nonfiction, helped propel him to a MacArthur fellowship, and cemented his status as one of the leading voices on race in America.
One World acquired Eight Years last year, along with an untitled book of fiction by Coates.
Representatives for Coates and Random House did not immediately respond to EW’s request for comment.
