The trailer for the third season of True Detective has just dropped, giving us a hint of what we can expect from Mahershala Ali in the lead role.
The trailer shows his character, Arkansas state police detective Wayne Hays, responding to a traumatic case at three different ages.
“Before you ever knew me, I wasn’t scared much. That wasn’t a fear for me. Things I’ve seen, things I know, wouldn’t do anything but cause harm. My whole brain’s a bunch of missing pieces,” he says in the voiceover for the trailer.
“My job, there’s no certainty. This peace is more haunting than anything. I want to know the whole story,” he concludes.
HBO president of programming Casey Bloys confirmed last year that the network had reached a deal with the Oscar-winning Moonlight actor to star in the third season of the anthology series.
The first season, which starred Matthew McConaughey and Woody Harrelson, debuted in 2014 to commercial and critical success.
The follow-up attracted big time talent — Colin Farrell, Vince Vaughn, and Rachel McAdams — but failed to garner the same positive reaction, leaving the future in doubt.
Season 3 of True Detective will premiere in January 2019 on HBO. We can’t wait!
