An in-depth documentary about the late Whitney Houston will debut at the Tribeca Film Festival this spring.
Whitney: ‘Can I Be Me, directed by Nick Broomfield and Rudi Dolezal, will follow Houston’s career and sudden death five years ago from accidental drowning. Broomfield is best known for his documentary film “Kurt & Courtney,” about the tumultuous relationship between Kurt Cobain and Courtney Love.

The Showtime doc will make its debut at the famous festival in April. Whitney’s story has already been told in biopic form, in the 2015 Lifetime film directed by Angela Bassett.
Houston died after being found submerged in the bathtub in her suite at the Beverly Hilton Hotel on Feb. 11, 2012. The cause of death was deemed accidental drowning, and an autopsy showed she had various drugs in her system.
Broomfield told Indiewire last year that he had little interest in speaking with Bobby Brown for the film: “Brown and Whitney were in a kind of dance,” he said. “They were completely destructive because they were in a weird competition. I’ve never heard Bobby Brown even vaguely talk eloquently about that. I also don’t want to spend that kind of money on him.”
Whitney will also appear in Clive Davis’ own documentary Clive Davis: The Soundtrack of Our Lives that is also set to debut at the same festival. Davis, Houston’s longtime producer, discovered her in 1983.
The Tribeca Film Festival will take place April 19-30, 2017.
