ESSENCE’s Cori Murray and Yolanda Sangweni welcomed Insecure actress Yvonne Orji for the latest episode of Yes, Girl!, which you’ll undoubtedly laugh your way through.
Orji hilariously recounts moving to New York City on blind faith, working at Cheesecake Factory to save for an acting class, and dodging Sallie Mae after deciding to give comedy a shot.
The actress also talks growing up in Maryland and being bullied by a very punctual kid, who insisted on meeting up for a fight at three. “I was the kid who was like, ‘Can we not just talk about it? We can use our words. If you get to know me I’ll be your best friend.’ And, they were like, ‘Nah, we don’t want to get to know you,'” she revealed, “I didn’t really know who I was because I was just trying to be whoever I could be to be liked.”
And, in the heated debate between #TeamLawrence and #TeamIssa, it seems Orji has kind of picked a side. “Man, all these fools talking about Team Lawrence, Lawrence Hive! Lawrence just got a job in episode seven, like, he just cashed his first check,” she joked, “Listen, I team black love. I’m team love the one who loves you back.”
She did add, however, that Lawrence grabbing up his little pillow was “petty wap to the finest.”
