Wow, what a night! Beyoncé officially has more Grammys than any other artist, legends Stevie Wonder and Smokey Robinson showed the youngins how it’s done, and there was a huge 50th celebration of hip hop. And speaking of hip hop, rapper, and all-around fashion girl Cardi B delivered on the fashions. It’s just like Cardi to serve not one but two major looks at the same event. After walking the red carpet at the 2023 Grammy’s wearing that sculptural, cerulean Gaurav Gupta couture ensemble, as she took to the stage to present the award for Best Rap Album, she made another costume change. This time into a sparkling, metal-clad gown from Paco Rabanne gown with an accompanying metal chainmail headdress. The Gown was from Paco Rabanne’s Spring/Summer 21′ show and the headdress from the maison’s Fall/Winter 20′ show.
And while these both were designed by the current Creative Director Julien Dossena, the essence of the late Paco Rabanne radiates through. Knowing Kollin and the intention beyond his countless collaborations with the Grammy Award Winning rapper, we’re 100% sure this was an homage to the late, great father of the space-age aesthetic, Paco Rabanne. The fashion industry lost the design heavyweight, dubbed the “enfant terrible,” on Friday, February 3rd, and continues to mourn his passing. As Rabanne was very much involved in pop culture, theater, and music, this was a sweet tribute to his design legacy.
Paco Rabanne, alongside contemporaries like André Courrèges and Pierre Cardin, revolutionized the fashion industry in the late 50s -early 60s, creating what was known as the space-age/mod aesthetic. Using unconventional materials like plastic, metal, and chainmail. Always looking forward, channeling a futuristic feel. And Cardi’s Grammy look falls right in line with that.
