It’s very rare that you come across that lone designer who really captures the spirit of a movement, who also has the dual ability to remain true to their aesthetic while creating a sellable collection. Well, Telfar is that designer.
For his spring/summer 2017 collection, the New York City-based designer presented a re-purposed collection of casual clothes that incorporated laser cut-outs, backless smock-tops, asymmetrical hemlines and bold color-blocking (royal blues, neon greens, orange and yellow).
“I’m very much the next wave. It’s taken some time for people to let my style sink in, and this show has really helped to showcase that,” Telfar told ESSENCE. “My main goal is to make things that are recognizably me. We’ve been setting trends and it’s time for me to be at the forefront. No more underground.”
The collection was presented Thursday in a gymnasium-style setting –replete with lane markings on the floor — so sportswear was the inherent theme. He even cast 2016 Olympic gold, silver and bronze medalist, Tori Bowie, as a model. This marked Bowie’s first-time hitting the runway at a fashion event.
When we asked her if she’s a “fashion girl,” Bowie told ESSENCE: “I’m usually just wearing something comfortable, but I absolutely love being into my hair and nails! That’s the most important part. It’s one of my priorities!”
Well, she certainly killed it at the Rio Olympics, and she did a great job on the runway as well. Her appearance was one of those bold moves that helped Telfar stride toward fashion podium glory!
