Kanye West kicked off New York Fashion Week with the debut of his Yeezy Season 4 collection yesterday in New York City. From getting the invite for the show at 4 o’clock in the morning to realizing “multiracial” was Kanye’s way of saying a plethora of #Blackgirlmagic, these are the emotional stages Yeezy Season 4 took me through.
Joy: I woke up to what I thought would be a normal day. Instead I was met with a call at 7:12 am letting me know that at approximately 4am, Kanye West’s people blessed the ESSENCE inbox with an invitation to the Yeezy Season 4 show. I smiled way harder than I wanted to and realized then and there that anything is possible.
Deep Interspection: What exactly will I wear? The question crossed my mind as I realized that I own no Yeezy merchandise and am not quite prepared to bring out the heavy fashion week artillery. I decided on denim. Denim never fails.
Anticipation: As my excitement grew, despite my efforts to just chill, I wondered if I really had to wait until 1pm to make my way to the show? Once I arrived on Roosevelt Island and began confidently walking, I was brutally reminded that Siri never really has my back. I ended up on the opposite side of the island and had to do a brisk walk/run to the correct location. When i did get there we waited for about an hour to be ushered into the main event. A little sweat and an end of summer tan never hurt anyone I guess.
Genuine Curiosity: I had so many questions leading up to the show. What exactly did Kanye mean when he said he was only casting “multiracial” models? Why is it so hot? When’s the show starting? Who’s coming? What will the models be wearing? I need answers!
Discovery: Multiracial translated to an almost completely Black cast. The show ended up starting at 4:05pm. Everyone from Lala Anthony, Pharrell and 2 Chainz to Desiigner, Fabolous, and of course, the Kardashian clan stepped out. The clothes were much like what we’ve come to expect from Yeezy (monochromatic atheleisure that will break the bank) but with a little added pizazz. Plush knits, shearling and killer thigh high boots made welcome appearance — even though it’s a spring/summer collection. Hmmmm.
Fear: I turned my head in wonder as I saw one model step onto the runway with a heel that was turned inward and showing no signs of misbehaving. I wondered how she’d make it around the long runway. We all thought she was headed for a tumble and that’s when I heard a few people mutter “Nooooo” under their breath. The model had taken a tumble — but thankfully someone came to the rescue and scooped her off of the runway. The crowd erupted in applause. Phew!
Pure Satisfaction: This emotion is also the equivalent of a long and heartfelt “Yasss.” It was beautiful to see that Black women were more than well represented at the show. There were models of color everywhere. Plus, Teyana Taylor was amongst the stunning models and she is — and always be — #bodygoals. And say what you will about Kanye, but he proved once again that dreams do come true and to that all I have to say is respect. Also, I absolutely need those clear thigh-high boots.
