ESSENCE Magazine’s September Leader of The New School designer Azede Jean-Pierre wowed us with a bold collection. The budding designer’s efforts to meld clean shapes with quirky yet sophisticated prints was a mission accomplished. This A-line dress and two-piece jacket and skirt combo are looks that will stand out amongst the crowd in any room.
Maria Cornejo is a master at minimialist designs that are anything but boring. This layered look of beiges mixes the structure of a sharp vest with the texture of pleats and draped pants, teaching us how simple pieces styled right can have mega impact.
Alexander Wang reigns as the king of cool. For example, just take this number Joan Smalls strutted on the runway: classic american stripes derived from what looks like oxford button down shirts twisted into a sexy blouse and thigh-baring skirt. What’s not to love about it?
Tie dye hasn’t looked this good since the 70s! Mara Hoffman’s penchant for bold brights and indigenous patterns effortlessly merged the two with this look. How she managed to update this haute hippie look? Even brighter colors than those of the Woodstock days but most importantly, the modern slim-cut neckline. Perfection!
Carly Cushnie and Michelle Ochs have perfected the bodycon statement dress with sexy cut-outs pretty much season-after-season. While we never grow tired of seeing their sharp silhouettes, it was wonderful to see Chanel Iman swathed in silk wearing this flowy, royal plum gown. It’s eactly what the red carpet ordered –– simple statement making pieces!
This new kid on the block (Jerome Lamar) is giving New York Fashion Week exactly what it needs: innovation. While Jerome 5:31 played with strong shapes like this bust cut-out blazer and eye-catching textures like this opalescent paillette skirt, it was most importantly, wearable.
Kimberly Goldson may be one of Harlem’s Fashion Row’s finest but the designer hails from Brooklyn and literally had her love for the burrough printed all-over her Spring 2014 collection. Goldson’s unconventional power suits always catch our eye and this one in particular, stole our hearts. First, the sleek arm cut-outs and the wide, high-waist trouser pant. And last but not least, the Brooklyn Bridge print cleverly trimming the suit, in our opinion, was genius.
Super feminine and girly pieces dominated the Honor runway, and frankly, after the rocker-chic trend take-over we’re delighted to see pretty things again. This laser-cut detailing gave a modern spin on classic lace and overlayed on a tweed jacket really makes this oldie a goodie.
For a second we thought we were at a Beyonce concert all over again. This periwinkle sequin embroidered tulle dress with chandelier hem is the epitome of glam. The best part –– Tadashi loves curvy girls so we’ll definitely see Amber Riley rocking this look fabulously on the red carpet.
