The 12th Annual Harlem’s Fashion Row Fashion Show and Style Awards was certainly a captivating and unforgettable night. This year HFR was held on Thursday, September 5th at the One World Trade Observatory. Attendees enjoyed a cocktail hour with drinks of their choice, with a beautiful view of New York City as the sunset. Prior to walking into the ceremony, guests were greeted and impressed by a presentation from several Black men and women as they stood with picket signs that featured phrases such as, “Honor Black History,” “Black is Beautiful” and “Praise Black Art.”
The invite-only affair was sponsored by Shea Moisture and BET Her and allowed a crop of new designers such as Prep Curry, Bishme Cromartie, Kapasa Musonda and Miko Underwood to showcase their latest collections. The night’s honorees were Mobolaji Dawodu, Mikki Taylor, and Law Roach.
Law Roach’s former client, singer and Grammy Award winner, Ciara was also presented with the Icon 360 Award. The Icon 360 Award recognizes individuals who inspire and contribute to the advancement of minorities in all areas of fashion, beauty, business, entertainment, and philanthropy. The “Level Up” singer accepted her award with happy tears as she thanked, HFR founder, Brandice Daniel for creating such an empowering event that continues to celebrate black creatives. “I am truly blessed to be honored by people who are leveling up in every year of their lives,” the entrepreneur said.
Before the event ended, Daniel told the attendees that tonight was a test. What was the test? To wear all black designers for the evening. Daniel has been championing the cause for 12 years now and continues to disrupt the fashion status quo. Along with yet another powerful gala, Daniel also announced the launch of HFR’s e-commerce site, “In the Black.” The site launched with one of New York’s designers, Undra Celeste, who worked with the HFR for their Nike collaboration with LeBron James. Each week the website will feature new style and designers that consumers can purchase from and learn about.
