This weekend Kamala Harris, the Vice President-elect, gave a historic acceptance speech on Saturday evening, just hours after she and President-elect Joe Biden were announced as the predicted winners of the United States election. Wearing New York–based label Carolina Herrera, Harris sported an off-white power suit, seemingly paying homage to the women’s suffrage movement.
“I know times have been challenging, especially the last several months,” Harris said, addressing the shared anxiety that has affected many voters this election season. “The grief, sorrow, and pain, the worries and the struggles, but we have also witnessed your courage, your resilience, and the generosity of your spirit. For four years, you marched and organized for equality and justice for our lives and for our planet.”
For her historic speech that night, Harris, usually wearing a neutral-colored uniformed blazer and skinny pants leg suit, the future VP created an eye-catching fashion moment with a reference that symbolized a ground-breaking movement. Harris is the first woman to hold a Vice President-elect seat along with being the first Black and Indian-American female VP. “But while I may be the first woman in this office, I will not be the last, because every little girl watching tonight sees that this is a country of possibilities,” exclaimed Harris when addressing the crowd.
The VP-elect’s outfit was confirmed on social media when Wes Gordon, Carolina Herrera’s Creative Director, posted a BTS video of Harris the night of her acceptance speech. This serves at the first time a woman will hold a position this high in U.S. politics which, we can predict, will attract more labels to dress the VP. From the looks of it, Harris will step into a more luxury suited style during her term.
