Whether it’s an Instagram live session or making a catchy bop, Florida rapper Saucy Santana knows how to work social media.
Although the 26-year-old recently reached over 1 million followers, Santana originally came on the scene as a makeup artist for the City Girls. After gaining popularity from joining 1/2 of the rap group Yung Miami on IG live, along with his ultra glam aesthetic that includes a collection of Chanel bags, Santana released his hit single “Walk Em Like A Dog,” in 2019 and began his career as an artist.
“I want people to be themselves no matter how it’s going to be perceived,” he tells ESSENCE in an exclusive video interview below. With the power of social media, the Tallahassee-born creative has been able to capture the masses on the internet and inadvertently curate larger conversations about normalizing queer artists – particularly in hip-hop. “It’s nothing like being you and being free,” the rapper includes.
Despite the unprecedented happenings of 2020, the rapper still managed to grab an even larger fan based this year. Releasing his mixtape “Imma Celebrity” earlier this year, the rapper also shares features from popular rap girls like Mulatto and LightSkinKeisha.
Below, ESSENCE got a chance to chat with Santana about his recent successes and get his answers to a few spicy questions.
