Tennis star Serena Williams has continued to break down glass ceilings. In addition to her wildly successful sports career, she has invested in underrepresented communities, launched a fine jewelry line and created her S by Serena fashion label.
Next up for the supreme athlete is Serena’s Design Crew, where a select group of 10 applicants will get the chance to create a Nike x Serena Williams capsule collection. “I always want to make sure that we are able to increase diversity and inclusiveness. I thought it was a great way to partner with them,” Williams told Vogue.
Last month, applicants participated in a design challenge at Nike’s New York HQ. The 40 semifinalists were selected by industry insiders, including Harlem’s Fashion’s Row, a champion for Black designers. A group of ten were then selected to apprentice at Nike’s global headquarters in Beaverton, Oregon. They will spend the next seven months crafting a capsule collection alongside Williams and the brand’s designers.
Unfortunately, the collection won’t be out until 2021, but we’ll keep our eyes open for the Serena Williams x Nike collection.
