On Wednesday, designer Shanel Campbell debuted her label SHVNY’s Spring/Summer 2019 collection at New York Fashion Week (NYFW). And Campbell made sure her show was black-ity black
black.
The young Black designer and Parsons graduate is on track towards becoming a major fashion name and her blossoming success proves it. This year women like
Solange Knowles,
Issa Rae,
Teyanna Taylor, and
Ciara were seen rocking her designs. Now, she’s showcasing her work during one of fashion’s most prominent events, NYFW.
Campbell presented a red and black color schemed collection with her signature deconstructed and industrial style. The bold collection is comprised of unique variations of dresses with an unprecedented edge, bodysuits, chaps, and trousers. The designer’s first fashion show was triumphant and full of originality, and this all came to life with the help of other women of color.
“[A]ll of the women in the show will be black or mixed,”
Campbell shared with WWD in a recent interview. She also shared that her team was also dominated by Black creatives such as
Shavone,
Alees Yvon,
Anzie Dasabe, and many more modeling her designs in a Black-owned studio.
Also, Campbell had the model’s hair, nails, and makeup done by Black professionals. All of which is very telling of who Shanel Campbell is and what she values as an artist. In every aspect, this show was the epitome of #BlackGirlMagic.
