Yesterday evening, art curator Antwaun Sargent hosted an exhibition for his new book ‘The New Black Vanguard: Photography Between Art and Fashion.’ Sargent partnered with the publisher and foundation Aperture, bringing together the work of the next wave of the groundbreaking black artist.
“In my wildest dreams, I could not see that people would respond to the exhibition and would show up in the numbers that they did,” Sargent told ESSENCE. From Tyler Mitchell to Renell Medrano, to Quil Lemons, The New Black Vanguard addresses a radical transformation taking place in fashion and art in which black creators are at the forefront of inspiration. “Last night, we were there essentially to celebrate those artists. Yes, I wrote the book, but the book or an exhibition would not exist without the artists who were creating across the globe,” said Sargent.
“I hope that there’s also a sense of history that is communicated.” -Antwaun Sargent.
‘The New Black Vanguard: Photography Between Art and Fashion‘ exhibit is open for viewership at Aperture Gallery and Bookstore in NYC until January 18, 2020. Priced at $50 it is now available for purchase at aperture.org.
“As you look at these photographs, which have all been made in the last few years, I hope that there’s also a sense of history that is communicated,” concluded Sargent.
