For many, fashion week is the most wonderful time of the year. However, it is not as glamorous as one may think and it is very easy to get overwhelmed. Running from show to show can become exhausting and if you are a freelancer juggling several commitments, meeting deadlines and trying to prioritize your time is a constant battle.
ESSENCE is here to remind you that you cannot beat yourself up. If you simply don’t have the energy, don’t push yourself. Your mental health and physical health are way more important than stressing yourself out to make it to a fashion show or an event. In 2020, we are making self-care a priority and really listening to our bodies. Here are a few tips on how to survive this fashion month.
Stay Hydrated
Before anything make sure you are hydrated and well-rested. Early mornings and late nights can be draining. Get enough sleep and give your body the fuel that it needs.
Stick To A Solid Schedule
If you know your schedule is going to be hectic find your balance. Think about what has made you feel cool, calm and collected in the past. If it’s only attending two to three shows a day, then do your best to stick to that schedule.
Talk About It
Consider sharing how you’re feeling with a manager or co-worker that you can trust. If you are comfortable, be honest with them and let them know that you might have bitten off more than you could chew and you would like to go about things differently. If you are not comfortable, reach out to a close friend and let them know how you are feeling. Discussing what you are currently dealing with will definitely help you release your emotions. Remember being overwhelmed doesn’t make you weak if anything it makes you aware.
Treat Yourself
You should always treat yourself. Before the madness begins and your schedule gets hectic, take some time to meditate and relax. Spending some quality time with your significant other or friends is also another great way to help you prepare for fashion week. When fashion week comes to an end, treat yourself to a massage, go out for drinks with your squad, and do whatever you need to do to decompress and clear your mind. You earned it.
