Award shows may look a little different due to the pandemic, but that’s not stopping the entertainment industry. Yesterday evening, the People’s Choice Awards were held, and actress Tracee Ellis Ross was honored with the Fashion Icon Award. And rightfully so.
The entertainer has graced this industry for 20 years with her award-winning talent but has also curated conversations about the way in which the Black actress is characterized in regards to fashion. Ellis Ross continued the conversation that ‘it’s cool for Black entertainers to wear couture,’ and she arguably has had a hand in why many couture houses work with Black women—not to forget many groundbreaking entertainers who paved the way before the Black-ish star, including her mother, Diana Ross. Tracee said that, when she was younger, she asked her superstar mother for a seasonal shopping budget. “Spoiler alert, I did not get it,” she included in her acceptance speech. “I have to thank my mom herself… for her sense of style, her epic closet, and her glamour that introduced me to the power of fashion.”
Ellis also spoke on how Black artistry plays in fashion. “If featuring Black designers at the American Music Awards helps someone see the power of Black artistry… then you heard me loud and clear.” Continuing her advocacy for Black excellence, Ellis slayed her acceptance speech yesterday evening, showcasing why she was the rightful honoree.
