D’Angelo’s Greatest Hits

One of Soul’s biggest and most talented stars, D’Angelo is also one of the most reclusive. The Richmond, Virginia native released only two albums, 1995’s Brown Sugar and 2000’s Voodoo, but recently he performed a few dates across the pond in Europe. Now D’Angelo is gearing up to play the first night of the ESSENCE Music Festival on July 6. Let’s take a trip down memory lane as we get ready for some D’Angelo, shall we?

“Brown Sugar”

D’Angelo’s first single in 1995 was the smooth “Brown Sugar,” which he co-created with A Tribe Called Quest’s Ali Shaheed.

“Spanish Joint”

Blending Spanish guitar, conga drums and a head-bobbing drum line, “Spanish Joint” is one of the signature tracks from D’Angelo’s sophomore album Voodoo.

“Cruisin'”

Boasting an easy rhythm along with D’Angelo’s silky tenor, “Cruisin’” was the second single from his debut album Brown Sugar and the video even featured New York’s Hot 97 radio personality Angie Martinez.

“Send It On”

In 2000, D’Angelo launched the Voodoo tour that left women high and men embarrassed by his power on stage and “Send It On,” a song he produced and arranged himself, was a great crowd pleaser.

Lauryn Hill’s “Nothing Even Matters” Featuring D’Angelo

Lauryn Hill’s debut album The Miseduation of Lauryn Hill had a slew of hits but it was her duet with D’Angelo for the romantic “Nothing Even Matters,” written about her late relationship Rohan Marley, that really stood out.

“Lady”

If you were in a relationship in 1995 and your man was on his job, he dedicated D’Angelo’s “Lady” to you during the local slow jam hour.

“Me And Those Dreamin’ Eyes Of Mine”

The fourth single from Brown Sugar, D’Angelo’s tenor floated through “Me And Those Dreamin’ Eyes Of Mine” and the video gave us a taste of the sexy singer in four different looks. Yes, please.

“Lady (Remix)” Featuring AZ

D’Angelo’s gave his hit “Lady” another round, alongside New York MC AZ and a few soul divas like Erykah Badu, Faith Evans and Joi.

Raphael Saadiq’s “Be Here” Featuring D’Angelo

After collaborating on D’Angelo’s breakout hit single “Untitled,” Raphael Saadiq and the Virginia native worked together again on Saadiq’s “Be Here.”

“Untitled (How Does It Feel)”

Not much needs to be said for “Untitled,” right? Every woman remembers exactly where they were the first time they watched D’Angelo’s body … er, video. This sultry slow jam became D’Angelo’s defining moment and his biggest hit, reaching no. 1 on the Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Airplay chart.
