Kim Burrell is a gospel icon. With her outstanding voice, commitment to her ministry, her powerful spirit and her passion of helping along other singers, it’s easy to see why we chose her to be honored during the ESSENCE Empowerment Experience at this years’ ESSENCE Fest. That was the easy part. The difficult part of the process was selecting singers who could live up to her incomprable voice and do her God-given talents justice.
We thought long and hard (and heard your requests on Facebook), and one person came to mind: Jazmine Sullivan.
After taking off a few years from the music industry to recover from an abusive relationship, the Philadelphia native returned stronger than ever in her music and her presence. The young singer may have the best runs in the business and her raspy, soulful tone is a direct result of her years of studying Kim Burrell growing up as a child. In 2010, Sullivan said she listened to Burrell’s music “throughout her entire childhood.” Therefore, it made perfect sense to have her involved at this years’ All Star Tribute.
Currently, the 28-year-old Reality Show singer is touring the country to promote her latest album and personally meet all of her fans. But when she comes to New Orleans, fans will get to see her in a whole new light as she uses her voice to give God the glory for blessing us with Kim Burrell.
Other performers for the night include Jessica Reedy, Jonathan McReynolds and many more.
