Earlier this morning (May 28), Oscar-award winning rapper and actor Common spoke to “The Steve Harvey Morning Show” about how excited he is to take the MainStage at the 2015 ESSENCE FEST on Saturday, July 4.
His 2015 Oscar win for Best Song, with “Glory,” catapulted the multitalented Chicago native into a new realm of success and fame. Still, through it all, he remained connected to the issues that mattered in his community and neighborhoods around the world dealing with social injustice. His Oscar acceptance speech moved the entire crowd to tears and solidified his place one of the leaders in the current fight for justice. Because of how much he loves #ESSENCEFEST, he decided to return to bless our stage once again and give fans a glimpse of a new kind of show.
“As an actor too, I like to add all of those elements to my show. You’re going to get all of the classic music and soul music that we’ve put across, but then you are going to get stories to it and themes,” Common said. “When I do shows now, I like for it to be like theater… We are going to light that joint up and give them something they never saw before.”
This year will mark Common’s fourth appearance at ESSENCE Fest, and according to how he raved about it on the nationally syndicated morning show, he’s more excited than ever to #BRINGTHELOVE with us to New Orleans. He said, “I’ve been there a couple of years. It is LOVE. I’ve had some of the best experiences I’ve ever experienced.”
After mentioning how much he loves to feel the love from the women of the audience, he summed up why ESSENCE Fest is unlike any other festival around; “You hear the music, you hear the talks, you hear the music and everything with the spirituality…[You’re] like, man, we are some beautiful people.”
